Background Information

On September 10, 2005 U2 contributed to the Hurricane Katrina benefit DVD, “Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast”. Their contribution was performed live from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto Canada, where they were rehersing for the third leg of the Vertigo Tour. As a special bonus, Mary J. Blige appeared with them to sing “One” on that telethon. That performance was released as a concert DVD and features the original version of this song. For her album “The Breakthrough”, Mary J. Blige took this base performance from September 2005, and added additional strings and vocals, as well as other additional music.

The song was edited down to a “Single Edit” of the track, and was released in the UK and Europe as a single.

In the UK there were two versions of the CD. Both were released in a slimline jewel case and were backed with other songs by Mary J. Blige. The first featured the cover in black and white and was backed with “Can’t Hide from Luv”. The second featured the cover in colour and had the b-sides “I’m Going Down (Live)” and “My Life ’05”. This second version also featured a link to which you could download the video in low quality (WMV format) with the CD. In Europe, the colour version of the single had the same b-sides but instead of featuring a download of the video, the CD was an enhanced CD and the video was available right on the CD. The video on the CD was in mpeg format (320×240) and was the 4:26 version of the song. The second version in Europe, with “Can’t Hide from Luv” was released in a card sleeve and a colour front cover.
